Garden Centre ...

A Garden Centre with a difference!

We are a not for profit organisation and any surplus made from takings is reinvested into the project. We are reducing environmentally damaging practices were possible. Plants produced on site are grown to organic standards in peat free compost, without the use of animal by-products, artificial growth hormones, pesticides or fertilizers. Pots are reused and waste recycled.

Friendly and helpful staff! Our horticulturally qualified and experienced staff are on hand to answer your gardening questions and provide useful advice on organic and sustainable growing.

Why 'peat free'?

Around half a million tonnes of carbon dioxide is emitted each year as a result of peat extraction from UK sites for horticultural use. This doesn't take account of the fact that we import over 50 percent of our peat from overseas.

Lowland peat bogs and their wildlife are threatened through peat extraction for garden composts and other uses. Peat-land wildlife, such as dragonflies, butterflies and birds, depend on peat for its survival.

Peat develops very slowly, no more than 1mm in depth per year. A 10 metre deep peat reserve will have taken 10,000 years to develop. So when peat is mined for garden compost it will take 1,000 years to replace every metre that is taken away.

Barbeque Charcoal, made in Manchester by local coppicer Mike Carswell

Biochar, Made in Manchester from coppiced wood, biochar is fine grained charcoal which helps to sweeten and break down heavy sols such as clay.Dig in liberally to soils before planting or for no-dig gardening add to your compost graduallly throughout the year.

Carbon, in the form of biochar, when introduced into soils doesn't add fertility, it creates a 'coral reef', an ideal matrix to house the very microbial communities that make available and cycle the nutrients essential for good plant growth. With biochar we can both sequestrate atmospheric carbon and boost soil fertility. Biochar, when inoculated with compost teas, very quickly begins to work its magic, re-energising degraded soils

Mycorrhizal Fungi, beneficial fungi which grow with plants to form a secondary root system, vastly increasing available water and nutrients, improving establishment, health and vigour. Will spread around the garden for the benefit of all!

We recycle, reuse and reduce ...!

plasticpots plastic bag   logo

Most of us have a mini plastic pot mountain lurking somewhere in our garden and for most of us, our options for disposing of them responsibly are limited. So why are they so hard to recycle, and what can we do about it? Plastic pots are made from different types of plastic to those used in food recycling. This means that many local authorities won't accept them. BUT WE DO !

Bring your old cleaned pots to us and we will give them away to others via our Pot Rescue scheme. Please don't bring us broken ones! We would also be happy to get your old plastic bags so that we can reuse them in our shop ...!

Thank you.
