Mission, Aims and Objectives

Vision
Horticulture opportunities for all, greening Hulme, Moss Side and wider Manchester

Mission Statement

Our Mission is to use the initiative and creativity of local people to regenerate inner-city land into an
accessible and sustainable community garden and nursery that will:

  • Provide a community focal point
  • Work to revitalise the urban environment

Promote the health and well being of the people of Hulme and Moss Side.

Our charitable objects are:
For the benefit of the communities of Hulme and Moss Side and wider Manchester:

  • To advance education in horticulture, conservation, food production and nutrition - through amongst
other things new free workshops in 'DIY Fruit and Veg' which will commence early in 2008.
  • To advance education and vocational training in horticulture and the operation and management of a
garden  centre; particularly among unemployed people seeking employment - we run in conjunction
the City College an NCFE qualification in Creative Craft and Sustainable Development, Level 1
    Horticulture
  • To provide recreation and leisure facilities in the interests of social welfare through the provision of
a community garden and activities in horticulture - provide opportunities for volunteers to learn
    horticultural skills.

The project will fit into these objectives by:

  1. Developing the Community Garden Centre, including the community gardens, for benefit of the
    community as a whole.
  2. Developing horticultural training programmes to increase the skills and capacity of unemployed
people and other client groups e.g. health, mental health and schools. Through a structured
volunteer programme and free workshops for the community.
  3. Developing volunteering opportunities and a community information point, to support community
spirit and participation in a wide range of local activities residents groups and networks.
  4. Developing the Garden Centre as a viable social enterprise, supporting local employment and
providing education about organic growing, wild life conservation and sustainable urban communities.

Our gardening products and services are available for all who wish to use them. Hulme Community Garden
Centre is a not for profit business, profit from sales will be used to subsidise our community
services.
