Click here to see all our wonderful volunteers ... Hulme Community Garden Centre was established 12 years ago to bring horticulture opportunities for all, greening Hulme and Moss Side. We provide leisure and recreational facilities in the interests of social welfare through the provision of community gardens and activities in horticulture. We provide opportunities for volunteers to learn horticultural skills. Our mission is to use this initiative, and the creativity of local people, to regenerate inner-city land into an accessible and sustainable community garden and nursery. Volunteers are an integral part of our initiative without whom we wouldn't have achieved the many projects that we run. If you would like to give your free time to help us in any capacity you can, we would be very pleased to see you. Volunteering can be undertaken at any time, with hours to suit you. We recommend however, that the best way to start is to phone us on 227 8198 and ask for Helene and you can discuss with her a day that would suit you. Our principal volunteers day is Wednesday. However we can also offer Friday, Saturday or Sunday, depending on the supervision required. For special training session or supervised sessions with GP referal, please see 'Project' page. We have a proven track record in working with other voluntary organisations and groups and welcome any enquiries regarding volunteer opportunities. We welcome young people interested in advancing their education and vocational training in horticulture and the day to day running and management of our garden centre. We also welcome unemployed people seeking employment. If you are interested in any of the above, give us a ring or just turn up to have a chat. Please contact our volunteer coordinator, Helene Rudlin on 0161 227 8198 for further details |

Our volunteers experiences, and what they have to say ..."I have been a volunteer since February 2001 when there was only one cabin and one tunnel and lots of space. I come regularly once a week to make a pleasant change from being retired at home. I have undertaken all activities, from pricking out seedlings to major surgery on shrubs. I have learned a lot and I'm still learning at 74! I have seen remarkable development of the site, from derelict to impressive landscape. It is a tribute to the staff." Richard "I , like many others who live in the Hulme/Moss Side area live in a flat, with no communal garden, no balcony or room for pots, no recycling/composting facility, and more importantly greenery. I would watch gardening programmes on TV and really get the bug but I had no outlet. " The Hulme Community Garden Centre (HCGC) has given me the freedom to come along when I can and dive in and get my hands dirty." Andrew "Being a volunteer at the centre brings me closer to nature in my neighbourhood. It feels rewarding to know that the projects and work I do goes into people's homes. The co-workers are very friendly and helpful, the emphasis being on enjoying the work. There can be differet things to do - I am not just a labourer. I am looking forward to seeing how the work evolves in different seasons. Learning gardening skills means you can take them into other areas of life and work. Knowing that a lot of animals, insects and birds visit the garden, it is clear that we are helping the environment - long may this continue!" Phil (Thank you to Phil for all his wonderful work which includes all the signs, wooden structures and his contribution to all the many projects we've undertaken x) Julie is on a voluntary work placement whilst studying a PHD in Learning Difficulties. She is an amazing support to all our groups and all adore her. Thank you Julie! ![]() Friday Club has grown Salad Blue spuds, yes blue! and we made chips seasoned with herbs all grown in the garden. |
